International Radiology Opportunities

Albany Med Radiology residents have the opportunity to participate in International Radiology projects.  Students travel to Ukraine yearly to work with Radiologists without Borders.  They work closely with our Breast/Body radiologist, Dr. Tariq Gill, who leads the group in setting up and improving mobile radiology services for mammography, ultrasound and x-ray to underserved regions in Ukraine.

In addition, residents have traveled to Uganda to participate in ultrasound projects with the Albany Medical Center RAD-AID Chapter.

Ukraine

Breast-Body Radiologist Dr. Tariq Gill has been working with Radiologists without Borders for many years.  This organization’s mission is to bring life saving imaging equipment to medically underserved populations.  They also identify equipment needed at a site and work to procure equipment donations within the United States.  Donated equipment is shipped to the underserved site and support is provided by Radiologists without Borders to provide training on equipment utilization.

Dr. Gill and Albany Medical Center Radiology Residents have been participating in yearly trips to the Ukraine to provide breast imaging as well as body ultrasound imaging training and support.  AMC Radiology Residents have participated in the yearly trip to Ukraine under the guidance of Dr. Gill to set up a mobile mammography site in the Ukraine.  The group travels to rural villages to provide screening mammograms to Ukrainian women, increasing access to breast cancer screening.  In addition, Dr. Gill and Radiologists without Borders obtained a mobile ultrasound unit donation to provide basic ultrasound imaging to assist in diagnosis and improve access for body imaging.  Dr. Gill and AMC radiology residents worked closely with Ukrainian Family Medicine Physicians to provide same day imaging and results to their Ukrainian patients.

Uganda

Albany Medical Center Family Medicine Physicians work with Engeye, a nonprofit organization, assisting in supporting healthcare, education and community development in the rural village of Ddegeya in Uganda.  One of our radiology residents participated in several trips to Ddegeya to work as a radiology consultant.  He brought a portable Point of Care ultrasound to teach basic ultrasound imaging to providers in Ddegeya.  He was also successful in procuring and donating an ultrasound unit to the clinic for obstetrical ultrasound.
